Spiders

Here goes another little insight into the crazy little mind of Fee.
Beware – this one is random.
OK, so the political agendas of search engines. This is something, which up until a few weeks ago, I had barely given it a thought. In fact, I was one of the many who believed that if it wasn’t on Google, then it simply didn’t exist. This is not true – there is more to the world (wide web) than meets the eye. So, how do Google (and other search engines for that matter) find websites? Official studies into the content of the web prove that a single search engine will only show about 16% of the internet, and the main search engines combined cover roughly 42% of the overall mass on the internet. Search engines have small employees built within the code called ‘spiders’ and for this exercise I want everyone to think of one with long thin spidery legs – capable of getting into websites! These spiders ‘harvest’ sites on the net – scouring every possible corner for keywords hidden in the code of the website. These creepy little employees crawl around the internet on the orders of Google searching out any new sites which have not been found. The true question is – who or what determines where these little spiders wander – and is there any discrimination when this takes place? For example – if a little spider finds a website with some content which Google deems as ‘unsuitable’ does the spider just walk away, and refuse to acknowledge it? Do we have bias little spiders, or fair ones which pride themselves on democracy? I think not. I think these little blighters have been brainwashed by search engines, and will only find websites which it wants to. Selfish little spiders. So…if you do actually understand this wondrous (if not slightly adapted, and simplified) explanation of website harvesting I ask you one thing – do you ever look at page 10,000 on Google? Why do some websites always come top of a Google search? This sadly cannot be answered, as like all clever businesses Google keeps its trade secrets exactly that – a secret. But it is something to ponder.

Hi-dee-hi,
Well if you are coming back for more you must love the wit and charm shown in previous postings - hmmm, how easy it is to be smart on the internet - but not so easy to be sarcastic I have found much to my avail when using instant messaging services and people have gotten genuinely offended by something which was meant only in a sarcastic manner. Anyway - that is a matter for another blog. Must concentrate on the job in hand.
OK, online security. This is something that many people fret about, personal addresses, banking details, date of birth...the list is endless. But surely many of these problems are not the fault of the internet, and can't even be blamed on bad anti-virus software, I believe that people do not think seirously enough about the information they put on the internet. Myself included. However, I do accept that there are some malicious minded people who will create bogus software to steal important details, and this will always be used as an argument against the security of our beloved internet.
I have the philosophy that I do not put any information which is truly important onto the internet, and so far, I have yet to experience any problems. I see the internet as a diary - if you put something personal in it, someone will find it, and use it against you, in the worst case scenario this is your bank details, and you get robbed blind. Or, there is so much information that it is possible to steal your identity entirely. This, I believe is not the fault of the internet, it is the fault of the human who put the data there in the first place. No matter how advanced security software gets in the future, there will always be the possibility of human error, or stupidity.
So, my final thought, (Jerry Springer Stylee) computer's cannot be blamed for our blatent disregard of common sense. We all know the chances when we log our bank details into a website, and we all know that there are possibilities of erasing the hard-disk when the open dodgy attachments - but we still do it. No one is oblvious to the problems, we have just accepted that there is a threat - just like we have accepted that there is a threat in crossing the road.
Adios.

Communication Technology: Nuisance or Essential? As a complete technical moron I would love to say that technology is pointless, and that we should all go back and paint pictures on cave walls, but I would be inept at that too as my art is terrible. No anyway, the benefits of communication technology! Well, facebook has recently become my life letting me get in contact with people that I haven't spoken to since I was 7, and has allowed me to find poeple I completely lost contact with - how can I hate a medium whcih allows me to do this? Well, I have my problems with such amazing technological advances, and that is that I have bad hair days. This may seem illogical, but bear with me. The invention of webcams and videophones has meant that I am no longer free to have a bad hair day. At any point I could be called by someone wanting a video call, and after any night out you can be certain that there will be photo evidence. Surely I have the right to have a bad hair day and not have it documented? Possibly. But, would I be willing to give up my laptop, mobile and access to the internet to achieve such a vain goal? No.

Right then, just to fill you all in on my last few days - it can all be summed up in one word 'Wii' damn Nintendo for making such an addictive console. I have what has been aptly named as 'Wii Arm' which means everytime I straighten my right arm it hurts, but I still can't stop playing it! Well, I do promise that this will get slightly more insightful, but the whole blog thing is easier said than done, and now I have a space to put down anything I want, I suddenly have nothing of interest to say! So, I will think seriously about this, and it will get better, until then you are stuck with updates about me and my Wii.
Ciao.

This is the start of my blog - and I promise to try and keep it up to date! I will try and make it as comprehensive as possible, and will avoid ranting at all costs - I can't promise you anything though!

Hope you enjoy!
