Here goes another little insight into the crazy little mind of Fee.
Beware – this one is random.
OK, so the political agendas of search engines. This is something, which up until a few weeks ago, I had barely given it a thought. In fact, I was one of the many who believed that if it wasn’t on Google, then it simply didn’t exist. This is not true – there is more to the world (wide web) than meets the eye. So, how do Google (and other search engines for that matter) find websites? Official studies into the content of the web prove that a single search engine will only show about 16% of the internet, and the main search engines combined cover roughly 42% of the overall mass on the internet. Search engines have small employees built within the code called ‘spiders’ and for this exercise I want everyone to think of one with long thin spidery legs – capable of getting into websites! These spiders ‘harvest’ sites on the net – scouring every possible corner for keywords hidden in the code of the website. These creepy little employees crawl around the internet on the orders of Google searching out any new sites which have not been found. The true question is – who or what determines where these little spiders wander – and is there any discrimination when this takes place? For example – if a little spider finds a website with some content which Google deems as ‘unsuitable’ does the spider just walk away, and refuse to acknowledge it? Do we have bias little spiders, or fair ones which pride themselves on democracy? I think not. I think these little blighters have been brainwashed by search engines, and will only find websites which it wants to. Selfish little spiders. So…if you do actually understand this wondrous (if not slightly adapted, and simplified) explanation of website harvesting I ask you one thing – do you ever look at page 10,000 on Google? Why do some websites always come top of a Google search? This sadly cannot be answered, as like all clever businesses Google keeps its trade secrets exactly that – a secret. But it is something to ponder.
